The Red Tower and the Shipyard

Down by the harbour stands the Red Tower (Kızıl Kule), the octagonal red-brick landmark built in the 13th century to guard the port. Right next to it, the medieval Shipyard (Tersane) is one of the few surviving Seljuk shipyards in Anatolia, its arched bays opening straight onto the sea. The castle walls look completely different from the sea, and the water turns extraordinary shades of turquoise near the cliffs. Most tours last a few hours and include swimming stops in quiet coves. Morning departures are usually calmer, as the wind can pick up in the afternoon.

For a compact look at the region's deep past, the Alanya Archaeological Museum is a worthwhile stop. Its ancient artefacts, statues and everyday objects are a reminder that Alanya has been settled for thousands of years, not just a modern holiday town. It slots neatly between a castle visit and the harbour, and makes a cool, calm break from the midday sun.

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to visit, as high summer can get hot and humid. Wear comfortable shoes for the steep, cobbled streets, and always carry water, a hat and sunscreen.
