Side Temple of Apollon: The Seaside Sunset Icon

The Temple of Apollon in Side is an ancient temple rising right at the water's edge at the tip of Antalya's Side peninsula. Dating to the 2nd century AD, its five elegant re-erected columns are Side's best-known emblem and the region's most famous sunset view. Standing at the end of the ancient city, right on the shore of the blue waters, these columns are reason enough on their own to come to Side.

History and what to see

Apollon was known in the ancient world as the god of the sun, of light and of the arts; in the harbour town of Side he was regarded as one of the protectors of sailors and of the city itself. Built in the Roman period, this temple witnessed the city's most magnificent days.

The five columns standing today were re-erected by painstakingly bringing together scattered architectural fragments. The reliefs of Medusa heads on the architrave — the horizontal stone block resting on the columns — are striking; these motifs are thought to have been used to ward off evil. Right beside the columns lie the remains of the neighbouring Temple of Athena and of a later basilica. The unity the structure forms with the sea, the sky and the ancient ruins behind it makes it far more than an ordinary temple.

How to get there

The Temple of Apollon lies within Side Ancient City, at the very tip of the peninsula, and is an easy walk from the town centre. Those coming from central Antalya can take a bus to Manavgat and then a dolmuş minibus to Side; within Side, a pleasant stroll to the temple awaits you.

If you come by car, you will need to use the car parks at the entrance to the peninsula and continue on foot, as the heart of the ancient city is largely pedestrianised. Since the temple sits in the open, at the end of the seaside promenade, it can usually be seen freely; even so, it is good to check current visiting conditions before you go.

When to go

The most magical time to see this temple is, without question, sunset. As the sun descends into the sea, the orange light filtering between the columns creates one of the region's most photographed scenes. For this reason the evening hours grow quite crowded; if you want a good spot, arrive a little before sunset. The early morning, on the other hand, is ideal for a quieter and cooler visit.

Since the Temple of Apollon sits at the end of the open seaside promenade, it can usually be seen freely and without charge.
